Keeping up with the Joneses. Jones. Man. Fickle creature. To keep up with man is to become part of a race where the rules and judges are ever changing. Always changing what you should look like, dress like, think like. There really is no way to actually appease every person on this earth. While you may please one person, someone else may not be satisfied or another may feel like you could have done more. How can we ever win if we are seeking man’s approval? The answer: we can’t.

Fortunately with God, the race, the rules, the Judge remain the same. 1 Samuel 16: 7 assures us that “the Lord sees not as man sees; for man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.” God is not concerned with the evolving fads and whims of man. He has been constant since the beginning of time and will forever remain the same. What He has desired of us has never changed. He wants a relationship with us – something personal, one-on-one and not superficial.

If you “first and most importantly seek (aim at, strive after) His kingdom and His righteousness [His way of doing and being right—the attitude and character of God]” (Matthew 6: 33 AMP), you will please the only One who matters.

Seek the approval of God. Build with Him. Trust in Him. All else will work itself out.

Galatians 1:10 (KJV) For do I now persuade men, or God? or do I seek to please men? for if I yet pleased men, I should not be the servant of Christ.

Galatians 1:10 (MSG) Do you think I speak this strongly in order to manipulate crowds? Or curry favor with God? Or get popular applause? If my goal was popularity, I wouldn’t bother being Christ’s slave.
