Ever find yourself in a bad situation and – being honest with yourself – knew it was all your fault that you wound up there? We can’t act like spoiled brats and blame God or cry out “Why me, God?” when we have strayed from Him and not lived according to His Word. However, God is loving and forgiving enough that He won’t turn His back on us.
In Jeremiah 29, he was telling the people that their actions brought them into bondage, but he laid out a plan …what they needed to do in order to get back to God.
I can’t say that I want spaghetti if I don’t buy the ingredients and cook it. Even going to a restaurant who has already prepared it for me requires some action on my part. The same applies to our desire for God. Jeremiah 29:13 uses phrases like “seek me”, “search for me”, “with all your heart”. We can’t say we want more of God or to be closer to Him without praying to Him, reading and studying our Word, applying His law to our lives. Only when we sincerely go after Him and crave His presence with every ounce of our being will we restore the relationship we strayed from.
